If you’ve spent any time wandering about town, you’ll notice that many stores and buildings have lucky storks perched atop their roofs.
Danes consider them a symbol of both luck and Danish pride.
After all, one of the most famous Danes, Hans Christian Andersen, wrote a fairy tale about them, appropriately titledĀ The Stork.
Storks are also associated with the return of spring, with extra luck bestowed upon families and businesses whose homes are chosen for the stork nests.
Henning Sorensen, the founder of both the Bit O’ Denmark restaurant and The Vinhus, wanted something special for his buildings. He commissioned a famous Danish artist to design his storks, as he felt the storks available in the United States were not of the proper proportions.
Thus, the storks you see there were produced in Poland by the artist and have slightly different dimensions than the other storks you will find about town.
